Creating accountability among Social Media companies
Facebook's research team reported Instagram made body image issues worse for 1 in 3 teenage girls; among users who reported suicidal thoughts, 13% in the US tracked them back to Instagram. Research departments at different social media companies identify issues that arise as products evolve but it has not been enough. Product changes also come with material financial and competing considerations, how should product choices be made and prioritised? Testwell is a school project collaboration with Deloitte to tackle the following challenge.
Problem Statement
What are the considerations for the role of user research in informing social media products and policy? And what are the implications for social media products in teenagers and young adults?
Solution
Testwell is a web platform empowering researchers and designers to advocate for young social media user's health and wellbeing, while creating accountability among social media platforms by using a social responsibility score system.
User Research
I Interviewed 5 young adults who are between 20-24 as well as 3 researchers and 3 designer working at social media companies from diverse backgrounds. I learned about their perspectives and attitude towards social responsibility by using empathy mapping from data collected during the interviews.
Qualitative Interviews
We identified two main challenges of the user types and gathered pain points faced by each group of users
Research Insights
After conducting interviews with researchers in social media companies, we identified 4 key insights
Research Insights
Through conducting interviews with young adults that use social media, we identified 4 other insights
Research Insights
We mapped out a user priority chart prioritizing users' most essential need attributes and showing today's needs being met at social media companies based on interviews with researchers and designers.
Synthesizing Insights
Social responsibility is a big topic. Facing the problem statement, the biggest challenge is to narrow it down in the right direction. So we organized the insights to define the design guide and began to ideate by brainstorming and co-designing.
Ideation
How might we create accountability and put users first? I prioritize recurring concerns from users.
User Journey
How might we create accountability and put users first? I prioritize recurring concerns from users.
User Research
I made visual stimuli to test in moderated and unmoderated settings to assess desirability of features. I brainstormed design solutions that not only guide researchers to make social media products more socially responsible but also fit their current workflow by integrating with Dovetail – a transcription and user research management App, after getting the results.
Conceptualization
We started creating the low-fi concepts for primary use cases. After conducting usability tests with the low-fidelity mockups, we began digitalizing designs.
The Solution
Next Steps
To measure success after this product is being launched, there are a few key numbers we can take a look at: 1. Conversion Rate: moving from the dashboard to the build new test page. 2. Number of tests per month. 3. Qualitative accounts of how awareness and test for social responsibility have improved using our product.
